Should I Waist Train While Working Out? Everything You Need to Know

If you’ve recently got into waist training or are thinking of doing so, you may have seen images of women showing off their curves while wearing a waist training during or after...

If you’ve recently got into waist training or are thinking of doing so, you may have seen images of women showing off their curves while wearing a waist training during or after a workout. In fact, many waist trainers on the market are designed so they can be worn during a workout, so what are the benefits, are there any negative effects, and should you wear a waist trainer while working out? Read on to find out!

Why Wear a Waist Trainer to Workout?

Stabilization – Your back and core contain the muscles responsible for stabilizing the body (besides your glutes which also put in a lot of work) and if you have a weak core a waist trainer will offer you some support and something for your muscles to brace against as you move around. (A little like a weightlifter’s belt, but more practical for other kinds of workouts.)

A Reminder – How many times have you been following along with an instructor in a class or at home and they tell you to pull in your core? All the time, right? When you’re wearing your waist trainer it’s doing a lot of the hard work for you, pulling you in and holding you in the right shape, allowing you to focus on your form.

Sweat More – Most waist trainers designed to be worn during your workouts will help you sweat more, thus shedding excess water weight from around your midsection, which will shrink your waist after just one workout.

It’s Motivating – Wouldn’t you like to workout more if you can see the difference you’re making to your body? When you wear your waist trainer you can see what your body will look like nature in the future, which will motivate you to keep working hard and making better food choices.

Confidence Boost – It’s always a confidence boost when you know your “extra” bits around your middle aren’t jiggling as you exercise.

How to Wear a Waist Trainer for Exercise

It’s completely safe to wear your waist trainer for exercise, provided it is designed to do so. There are, however, a few things you should keep in mind as you choose a waist trainer for your workouts.

1. Get the fit right – you shouldn’t size down your waist trainer if you’re in between sizes anyway, but this is nowhere truer than if you’re going to be working out vigorously. You need to remember that you need to supply your body with sufficient oxygen during your workouts, and if you’ve squeezed yourself into a waist trainer that’s too small for you, you’re not going to be able to do that efficiently.

2. Wash it after each use – if you want to workout in your waist trainer and wear one throughout the day, have at least two on the go so you can wash your waist trainer after a workout. Believe me, that thing is going to get sweaty! The last thing you need when you get your slim waist is a sweat rash too.

3. Wear well-fitting clothes – make sure your workout gear fits well under or over your waist trainer, as a lot of excess fabric will be bulky, uncomfortable and distracting.

Are There Any Dangers of Wearing a Waist Trainer During Exercise?

No – as long as you are wearing a suitably sized waist trainer that has been designed to be worn during exercise (no corsets!), and listen to your body and what it’s telling you, you can safely wear your waist trainer and reap the benefits.
